Western Canadian Boomers
In 2021, when the most recent Canadian census was conducted, boomers were aged between 57 and 75. Using 60 to 74 instead (because that’s the way Stats Can publishes the data) the boomer population in the four western provinces in 2021 was as follows:
BC 946,900 (19% of the total)
Alberta 646,400 (15%)
Saskatchewan 187,870 (17%)
Manitoba 218,170 (16%)
You might think numbers like this would lead Active Adult housing developers to target BC and Alberta but you would only be partly right. The Nautical Lands Group, Canada’s largest provider of Active Adult housing is a presence in Alberta but is completely absent from BC. Why is that? Good question.
We have been focused on Active Adult housing for a number of years now but in 2026 we plan to concentrate our minds even more wonderfully on Active Adult housing. That’s not because we expect to be hanged in a fortnight to steal a quote from Samuel Johnson, but because in addition to our normal focus on the subject, we are presenting a session at the annual BC Care Providers’ Association conference in May, this year to be held in Whistler.
The title of our presentation is Don’t Let the Boomer Boat Sail Without You. At the time I thought that was a cute title. I don’t anymore but it’s too late to change it.
